Cambridge Organic was born in Mill Road, Cambridge in 1998. The shop, named Farmer Giles, was dedicated to selling 100% organic produce. It was here that Duncan Catchpole, the company’s founder, first started delivering veg-boxes. Driven by a passion for sustainably grown produce, he handpicked quality items from the days availability and delivered it to the local area. It began as a handful of boxes to early adopters of the organic ethos; and some of those first members are still customers to this day.
Since then, the company has grown and transformed. The shop location closed, but Duncan continued the veg-box delivery service. Over the years it has developed from a one-man operation into a company of 29 staff members and around 1,500 customers.
From the start Cambridge Organic has worked directly with local organic growers; from small family run farms to historical market gardens and co-worker care farms. Cambridge Organic expanded into selling grocery items too, discovering and stocking items from local producers. Meet our local growers and makers here.
Cambridge Organic is a company driven by a purpose beyond profit. It functions to support a local food ecosystem. We operate with a passion shared by our founder, employees and producers; to connect delicious, organic and sustainably produced items to local people, in a way that is fair for all.
Duncan is the author of a book called ‘local food ecosystem’. In it he explains the ethos that drives the company and his vision of a unified Cambridge Food Hub.
